Is Taylor Swift a secret emo? The footage she posted on her Instagram suggests that the answer is a firm, resounding “yes.” Even if Swift’s now a world-domineering pop star—who owns the copyright on the term “sick beat”—she, like you, was once an awkward, hormonally imbalanced adolescent. And this became terribly, terribly evident over the weekend, when she hosted a birthday part for her friend Abigail.

Abigail and Swift, it seems, turned to the sweet, melodramatic sounds of Vagrant Records to help themselves through their acne-ridden years, and, as it turns out, they never got over their love for the ultimate softie, Dashboard Confessional.

Here’s Swift, explaining her friend’s love for the “Screaming Infidelities” singer.

Next, Swift did what all good pals do: On Abigail’s birthday, she brought Chris Carrabba to the party.

And to cap it off, dude even brought his guitar. And together with Swift and Paramore’s Hayley Williams—who seemingly appears out of nowhere—the three combined on a moment that brought emo kids to tears. Yes, they covered “Hands Down.”

Be still, our pop-punk-adoring adolescent hearts.
