Perhaps we’ve been too busy lobbing insults at Chad Kroeger to realize, but Avril Lavigne has spent much of the last six months out of the public spotlight. And after learning the reason why, it maybe makes sense why the Nickelback frontman takes the brunt of it so willingly.

In a new interview with People Magazine, Lavigne revealed that she spent the last five months bedridden from a bout with Lyme disease.

“I had no idea a bug bite could do this,” said Lavigne. She believes she was bitten by a tick last spring.

Lavigne had apparently been feeling off for months, and doctors were puzzled. It wasn’t until she went to Las Vegas to celebrate her 30th birthday in October that she was properly diagnosed.

The “Complicated” singer says she’s on the road to recovery now, claiming to be at about 80%, but at her worst went days without being able to stand.

“I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move. I thought I was dying.”

But after telling a fan she wasn’t feeling good, Lavigne says she started receiving messages and videos of support. That, and help from her mother and husband, are what she says helped her get better.

She’ll release her new single, “Fly,” later this month in support of the 2015 Special Olympics.
