If you’re like me, you’ve recently rediscovered the gem that is Willennium and are like, “man, I miss those days.” You know the ones: Before “Switch” and before Hitch and certainly before Focus. The days when Will “Woo Ha-Ha” Smith as as much an emcee as an actor, and a time when he was still good at both. Like, “I’m Comin'” is a jam, and we need more like it.

So what happened? Where’s the new music we’ve been hearing about for so long? What happened is easy: His kids.

We’ve already documented how fucking odd the Smith kids are, and for the record, we’re into it. That Will and his wife Jada have fostered an environment that lets his two kids grow as total weirdos is a good thing, except for when it comes to the Fresh Prince’s long-awaited return. Because according to Big Willie, kids Jaden and Willow have been keeping Mr. July’s new music at bay for a while now.

Smith told Jimmy Kimmel that he’s had the urge to write music for a while now, but when he sits down to pen something new, his kids make fun of him for it.

Jaden, for example, mocked him for writing songs with an actual pen on actual paper.

“I start writing and my son is like, ‘Oof. What… what are you doing?’ I said, ‘I’m going to start writing some rhymes.’ He takes the book away and says ‘it’s in the iPhone dad. Voice notes, and you do it in the iPhone.’ I was like ‘that’s not writing!'”

That, apparently, is how Drake does it. But Will Smith isn’t one to dictate his rhymes.

Whatever the case: Shut up, Jaden. Let your dad do his thing. It’s only fair: Will allows his kids to be conspiracy theorizing hip-hop aliens, so the least they could do his let him work through his process. He’s clearly yearning for it.

In the last few weeks, he’s done impromptu performances of “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” “Summertime” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” on Letterman, Ellen and Kimmel, so let’s just ride this out, okay kids?
