Yeah, we're crying too.

Johnny and June Carter Cash had a storybook romance: Not without its troubles, but one that lasted a lifetime. They met when Johnny Cash was just 23; thirteen years later, he proposed—in London, Ontario—and one week later, they were married. They stayed together for the next 35 years, until June’s death in 2003. Johnny passed away four months later—technically from diabetes, but more poetically from what many called a broken heart.

Point is, they were a pair for the ages. And now a new poll has confirmed that further, calling a 1994 love letter from Johnny to June the “the greatest love letter” of all time. That’s hard to quantify, but the actual letter speaks for itself. Read it below:

Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike.

We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me.

You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the #1 Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.

John

Cute. Nauseatingly cute. After 26 years of marriage, tacked on another 13 years of friendship, you can tell that Cash was still utterly smitten. They went through a lot together, from addictions and infidelity to illness, but man, the heart prevailed through it all.
