Last week, after posting a selfie in a Joey Bada$$-affiliated t-shirt, Malia Obama proved what we already knew: She was the coolest first daughter ever. (I mean, what do you think Rachel and Ben Harper listen to?) It appears that Malia’s a hip-hop head, but soon after Bada$$’s Pro Era crew posted the image to Instagram, a mystery emerged: Was the girl in the photo really Malia? Was it actually taken in the White House, and if so, where? Who obtained the photo, and who sent it to Pro Era? Was the photo even authentic?

The mystery—and many hypotheses—unfolded over Twitter, Reddit, and Gawker’s comment section, after the latter broke the news that a “mutual friend” of Malia and Pro Era obtained the photo. Now, it appears the Malia selfie has piqued the interest of the White House themselves, who are investigating where the image came from. According to Fox News, they’ve launched a probe hoping to find the photo’s origins.

In the past, Michelle Obama has indicated that Malia does, indeed, have access to social media, so it’s completely possible that the photo came from one of her private accounts. The shirt, available for $40, also comes in a long sleeve, so if you’re hoping to replicate Malia’s style, head over to the Pro Era shop.
