It sounds silly to say as a grown-ass man with grown-ass responsibilities, but having short hair as a metalhead is something I’ve been self-conscious about since I chopped my mop off in the 10th grade. Dated as it seems to the outsider, luscious locks are like a badge of honour in the heavy music scene; a sign of endurance and, sad as it may seem, trueness. Well, that and leather forearm gauntlets.

And that’s what makes this quirky little story stand out.

Celebrating his 50th birthday, Thomas Brammer cut his hair for the first time in 34 years. He’d had his chest-length locks since he fell into the genre way back in 1980, but stuck to his resolution to lop it off once he hit the half-century mark.

“I always said I’d have my hair cut when I reached 50, or went bald or gray,” said Brammer to the Daily Record.

But it’s more than fashion for the Scottish metalhead, who raised more than £650 for Marie Curie’s cancer charity in the process.

“It made sense to raise some money for charity, and Marie Curie is special to Sharon,” he added, alluding to the charity’s care for his wife’s ailing stepfather.

Good on you, dude. \m/ [h/t Blabbermouth]
