The art of hip-hop album delays

November saw the two-and-a-half year wait for Azealia Banks’ debut LP, Broke With Expensive Taste come to an end. You may remember Banks gracing the July 2012 cover of AUX Magazine, at the time poised to be the breakout star of our young round up of viral sensations. Instead, we waited. And waited. And waited. Eventually, Banks parted ways with her label and without any notice, released BWET.
While album delays are commonplace, they seem to be most prevalent in hip-hop. Lil’ Wayne is currently riding his skateboard through a string of delays and label drama tweaking Tha Carter V, Jay Electronica’s debut is apparently Jay-Z’s favourite record of 2012 that we still haven’t heard, and had M.I.A. not threatened to leak Mantangi, we’re still not convinced we’d have heard it by now.
We’ve outlined the stories of some of the past decade’s most notable delays, from artists that made albums worth the wait (WATCH THE THRONE STAND UP) to albums that were not (KID SISTER), to all the albums we can’t wait to hear.
Except Detox. That thing is never coming out.
