TRENDING: 9 must-listen songs for the week of October 3rd

I can’t believe we’re already into October—where did that summer get to? I’m a big fan of fall, actually. Bundle up, get together, and put on some tunes for these upcoming cool nights. Here’s what made my “Trending” playlist this week. Take a spin and read our assessments below.

1. “Unbound” by Cathedrals

Cathedrals are San Francisco duo Brodie Jenkins and Johnny Hwin and this week they’re in the Hype Machine top 50 for releasing a video for their song “Unbound.” The strikingly beautiful video features a collaboration between the band, Maria Kochetkova (the principal ballerina in the San Francisco ballet) and The Sugar Cubes light sculpture, while brought to life by director Sam Pressman and cinematographer Isaac Bauman. Amazing video and song, which comes from the self-titled EP released on Neon Gold Records earlier this month.

2. “Slow Motion (Sylvan Esso remix)” by PHOX

As I mentioned earlier this week on my blog, I love it when bands I’m a fan of remix other bands I’m also a fan of. From the amount of remixes I come across in my daily listening, this is a rare event. Case in point, Sylvan Esso remixing PHOX’s track “Slow Motion”.

3. “Dangerous (Oliver Remix)” by Big Data

This song has legs! I’m so glad to continue hearing Big Data’s “Dangerous” on the radio these days, as since September of last year, I was calling it a runaway hit. With popular songs come remixes, and this one for me just stands out. Check out Fool’s Gold Record artist Oliver putting a new spin on this monster.

4. “Seasons (Waiting On You)” by Future Islands

Another monster, worthy of popping back into this weeks’ playlist, even though its 6 months old.  Are you sick of this song yet? Hopefully not, I’ve still got a couple hundred more listens.

5. “Light Me Up” by Flyte

Flyte are a London quartet flying high on the newly announced single “Light Me Up” (to be released on November 17th). This song and artist were another one of those great finds while making this weekly playlist, where I’m just continually hitting repeat over and over. Take a listen.

6. “Right Never Comes” by Milosh

Michael Milosh, vocalist of the duo Rhye, just released “Right Never Comes.” According to Milosh, “This is a song I wrote specifically for the Rhye live set to play in the Fall, 2014 at 8 shows. I’ll be releasing this as a Milosh release.” Keeping instrumentals minimal, this beautiful downtemo electro R&B ballad puts Milosh’s harmonizing vocals front and centre.

7. “Echo” by VÉRITÉ

There’s a lot of bloggers previewing bands and artists coming to NYC this month for CMJ, including a great amount of hype about hometown girl Vérité. If I were making the trip, I’d try to catch her show just to hear this infectious single “Echo,” off her EP of the same name.

8. “Shark” by Wonder Wonder

Another London band on the playlist, here’s Wonder Wonder with the song “Shark.” It’s the second release from their debut record, which they’ll be putting online track by track each month. I’m a sucker for those girl/boy vocals, sparse rhythm and minimal piano accompaniment.

9. “You Know” by James Vincent McMorrow

UK crooner James Vincent McMorrow recently let us know of the release of his deluxe edition of the album “Post Tropical” (out Nov. 10th), featuring some unreleased material, remixes and solo recordings that didn’t make the first cut. “You Know” is one of those songs, which in hearing now, I can’t believe didn’t make the first round.
