James Blunt has quietly reinvented himself from a joke to a joker, working hard to undo the damage done by 2004’s overplayed super-single “You’re Beautiful.” And the next step on his road to redemption is an apology for the song that launched him to the top of the wishy-washy totem pole.

He told Hello! magazine that he’s sorry “You’re Beautiful” was shoved down people’s throats, saying that “it became annoying, and then people start to associate the artist with the same word.”

I think, at the end of the day, I was marketed by a record company to appeal to women during Desperate Housewives commercials and you lose 50 per cent of the population in doing so.

Blunt says that the song’s over-saturation led people to think of him exclusively as an “insanely serious person.” Anyone who follows his fantastic Twitter feed knows it isn’t entirely true.

“I have a couple of over-emotional miserable songs that I’m known for, but I think it’s turned that corner now,” he continued. “People can see I don’t take myself that seriously.”

Turns out James Blunt’s cool as hell. And you know what? “You’re Beautiful” remains, as AUX’s Mark Teo puts it, a perfect “red wine bathtub jam.”

Hard to disagree with that, Mark.
