Earlier this month we told you about the Polaris Cover Series, our exciting new project with the Polaris Music Prize that sees former nominees Sarah Harmer, Whitehorse and The Great Lake Swimmers covering songs by other nominated artists. Today, we’re more than excited to share the first of the batch, Sarah Harmer’s cover of Caribou’s “Odessa”.

Taken off Dan Snaith’s 2010 album Swim, Harmer’s rendition of the classic Caribou cut adds an organic edge to the original’s backbone, tossing out its original twitches in favour of a looping acoustic guitar and Harmer’s layered, textured vocals. Call us biased if you’d like, but we think it’s utterly fantastic. We think you will too.

Stay tuned for two more videos later this month and in early September, and look for her “Odessa” cover on a special edition 7-inch as part of next year’s Record Store Day.

The winner of the 2014 Polaris Music Prize will be announced at a gala on September 22nd at the Carlu in Toronto. Like last year, we’ll be streaming the whole thing here.
