Late last year, when we picked MORI as one of 11 Montreal bands to watch in 2014, we had this to say about them: “If Fleetwood Mac had teamed up with Cyndi Lauper to write nothing but songs for ’80s movie montages, they would have been MORI.” Yes, that’s a big claim, and yes, we meant every word of it. MORI can be fun, deep, quirky, profound, thoughtful, and dancey all in the same song. It’s impossible not to love the bubblegum pop vocals of Ohara Hale and 80s-influenced synth and guitar arrangements of Martin Horn and Alex Cooper right off the bat. But the more you listen, the more you realize how nuanced and well crafted their songs are.

We’re going to admit that we had a bit of a love/hate relationship with MORI for a while. Love… well, because we loved them, and hate because the only gave us three songs to go on for the longest time. Now that’s all changed with the release of their debut EP, featuring three new songs and rerecorded versions of the old ones. Take an exclusive first listen below.

Everything from the sultry opener, “Look Who’s Got The Gun Now,” to the Madonna-invoking closer, “Running,” is nonstop irresistible pop, and this EP might be one of the best little nuggets of music to come out all year.

All of this just came out today, and we’re already impatient of more! Sorry for being so needy, guys! They assure us that EP 2 is on its way soon. And after all our begging, they actually gave us one more demo to tide us over, so we’re cool for now. Take a listen to their newest track, still underdevelopment, called “You’re Not Like Me.”
