It’s been four years since we’ve heard from Isis, but the L.A. post-metal act has seen an uptick in popularity in recent weeks due to an unfortunate coincidence. On Facebook, daft commenters have been disparaging the band because they share a name with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, a Middle Eastern jihadist group commonly referred to as, you guessed it, ISIS.

“Fans have emailed us that they’re reluctant to wear our T-shirts now and we’ve also gotten some off-color comments,” drummer Aaron Harris told ABC News.

While they haven’t released anything since their 2010 split with the Melvins, Isis use their Facebook page, which boasts nearly 173,000 fans, to update listeners on its members’ various ongoing projects. From Harris’ recording studio to post-Isis project Palms, their page has been a source for fans to follow what everyone’s been up to post-Wavering Radiant. As a result of the harassment—and frankly, lazy ignorance—they’ve been force to change their name on Facebook to the idiot-proof Isis (the band).

Just like our fans, we’ve been watching the news in disbelief. We haven’t commented on it because we haven’t been an active band since 2010, even though our music does live on.

Critically acclaimed for their evolved post-metal sound, Isis (the band) came together in 1997. The Islamic State formed 16 years later.
