John Legend, Mariah Carey and Cher all have one thing in common: Before breaking big, they all worked as backup singers.

While not specifically about them, their story, and the story of those like them, is what Morgan Neville tries to tell in his Oscar winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, which screens next Thursday (July 31) as the latest part of Open Roof’s 2014 festival.

Opening up the night is Jill Godin, a 20-year-old pop star who has uprooted to Toronto from New Brunswick.
