Let’s try something new here.

As part of my new weekly column on Aux.tv, I take a look at key songs charting on one of my favourite music destinations, the Hype Machine. An aggregation of RSS feeds from over 800 international music blogs, the Hype Machine is a great tool to find out what songs music bloggers are loving at any one moment. Catch up on what happened this week and pass it long. Here’s Aux.tv’s trending playlist for the week of July 11. Read our assessment after the jump.

1. “Trainwreck 1979” by Death From Above 1979

What a way to burst back on to the scene: DFA 1979 fans, wait no further for new music from this legendary TO band. Featuring the duo’s signature sound (pounding drums, heavy bass fuzz  & howling vocals), look for this song off the band’s upcoming release of The Physical World.

2. “My Song 5 (feat. A$AP Ferg)” by HAIM

This is not necessarily a new song, but a new version, so that’s why it feels so fresh. Celebrating their 7th anniversary as a band, HAIM shared a remix of “My Song 5”, featuring A$AP Ferg. Like a lot of great premieres, Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show broke this to the blogs and it’s steadily showing up everywhere this week.

3. “Red Eyes” by The War On Drugs

I can’t confirm if this song has actually stayed on the charts for seven months since it’s release, but sometimes a great song can fall off, then jump right back on again. As of today, 101 blogs on the Hype Machine have shared “Red Eyes” by The War On Drugs, and I’m guessing it popped back on the charts because of their incredible performance of the song on Letterman this week. Song of the summer? A contender for sure.

4. “Fiona Coyne” by Saint Pepsi

Named for a character on Degrassi, “Fiona Coyne” is Long Island artist Saint Pepsi’s latest single, off his first release with Carpark Records (out August 15th). Catchy, funky and fun.

5. “Tough Love” by Jessie Ware

I’m no expert on making playlists, but I always find it helps to a little variety, or I’ll put an arc in there. Let’s slow this playlist down a little with a new single from Jessie Ware. “Tough Love” is the first track from her forthcoming, BenZel produced new album.

6. “Terrified” by The Rural Alberta Advantage

The Rural Alberta Advantage are set to release their new album Mended With Gold on Paper Bag Records on September 30, and “Terrified” is our first listen.

“Last spring, I rented a remote cottage up in the Bruce Peninsula on the recommendation of some friends to try to do some writing for the new album,” singer Nils Edenloff posted on their website. “It turned out to be a pretty terrifying place to be alone with your thoughts—locals told me to watch out for black bears, the heat wasn’t working and at night it sounded like the cottage was surrounded by wolves. I slept with a pocket knife at arms-reach. It’s funny the lines that will run through your head when you’re alone like that and trying to get yourself to sleep- they inspired “To Be Scared,” which is probably one of my favorite songs on the record.”

7. “Grace” by Zola Blood

I had no idea who Zola Blood was until one of my contributors on Indie Music Filter tipped me to the amazing song “Grace.” Well, I still don’t really know much more now, but obscurity is the new thing these days. The band is the second signing after a 22 years of hiatus to Keith Aspden’s Pond Life Label (Talk Talk).

8. “Class Historian” by BRONCHO

This song might drive you crazy… but, it may not. Check out “Class Historian” by Oklahoma power-pop trio BRONCHO.  Specializing in bright, buzzing, preternaturally hooky retro garage rock, the band are gearing up to release Just Enough Hip To Be Woman on Sept 16th, via Dine Alone.

9. “Safety In Numbers” by We Were Promised Jetpacks

Off the Scottish band’s first LP in three years comes “Safety In Numbers,” by We Were Promised Jetpacks. It’s a song Consequence of Sound calls “a riveting post-punk rush of charged guitars and brooding vocals.” I call it a great way to round out this playlist.
