Like Dave Mustaine before him, Sir Mix-A-Lot joins the symphony for a surprising performance.

The last time we watched an aging 90s superstar play with the symphony, the results were… disastrous. But Sir-Mix-A-Lot is not Dave Mustaine, and in turn he’s embraced his hokeyness with open arms, and the resulting collaboration with the Seattle Symphony is less sad than it is endearing because of it.

I mean, when have you ever seen the symphony call up its audience?

Calling the gig “orchestral movements from the hood night,” Sir Mix-a-Lot urged that he didn’t touch and “would not bite” unless they wanted him to as he guided some audience members onto the stage. Twerking to the symphony? At least one girl goes for it. Because seriously? Why the fuck not. Literally a once in a lifetime opportunity.

If you’re curious why this happened, it’s part of the Seattle Symphony’s Sonic Evolution series, which tries to endear the supposedly stuffy symphony environment to a wider audience by working with local icons. And Sir Mix-A-Lot.

It’s weird, but it’s funny.
