Most in-the-wool music diehards—us included—share an unhealthy obsession with emerging artists. It’s made us the butt of countless hipster jokes: We love to discover bands on the cusp of greatness. We love sharing those bands with others. We love discovering our favourite new music before it’s officially declared Best New Music.

If there’s a theme to this month’s issue, it’s that it focuses on musicians getting ready to achieve their potential—and that all begins with our cover star, Sharon Van Etten.

Van Etten made a name for herself with third album Tramp in 2012, an album that was assisted by members of The National, Beirut, and other high-profile backers. The (unpunctuated) question she poses on her new album’s title—Are We There—is answered resolutely: Yes. Van Etten has arrived. With an intensely personal, defiantly confident group of songs, the New York songwriter has taken a bold step forward, without the help of any A-list pals—and it’s resulted in one of the best albums we’ve heard all year. We spoke with her before she took off on tour, where, we suspect, she’ll earn fistfuls of new fans.

Dig deeper and you’ll find more examples of artists on the upswing. Ex-Thunderheist singer-rapper Isis Salam is making a name for herself in Germany’s permanently exploding electronic scene. No Problem are one of Canada’s best hardcore bands, and with a new LP under their belts, we expect to see them make waves out of Edmonton city limits. New York’s TEEN realize the potential that Kristina Lieberson hinted at with her previous project, Here We Go Magic. Martin Rodriguez and Karneef, meanwhile, make firm arguments that Montreal’s experimental music scene is among the globe’s best.

Plus try your hand our interactive Gaga or Metal? quiz, where you have to guess—yep—if the lyrics belong to Lady Gaga, or metal bands.

Thanks as always for reading! We love you.
