Let’s not make this a “Suicide Solution” situation.

Last night, 22-year-old Matthew Douglas de Grood allegedly took a knife to five friends at a Calgary house party. Five hours prior, Metro reports he’d posted Megadeth lyrics to his Facebook page.

“Dread and the fugitive — the world needs a hero,” wrote de Grood, riffing off Megadeth’s “Dread and the Fugitive Mind” off the band’s less-than-classic 2001 album The World Needs a Hero. Media outlets jumped on the news.

Immediately, the comparisons came out. But like Marilyn Manson didn’t cause Colombine, Dave Mustaine’s pissy politico diatribes can’t be contextualized in the context of an alleged mass murderer. Instead, take it as the piece of the puzzle:

That the son of a senior police chief would latch onto such an odd choice of albums is curious, but it’s a burden not even Mustaine deserves. And while the song boasts lyrics like “What if I do get caught? What if there is no judgment?,”All it’s more likely an indication of the crime’s pre-medititation than what inspired it.

More than anything, let’s not martyr a terrible song.
