For the music world, the holidays don’t happen in December—instead, they happen in mid-March, and rather than receiving hand-delivered gifts from the North Pole, we’re anticipating deliveries from Texas. That’s right: SXSW is upon us, and the digital-music-film-everything conference is where the year’s biggest musical stories are made, traded, and discovered. It’s bloody magical.

We’ll be in Austin monitoring the sitch, of course—in fact, we’re even partnering with the annual Canadian Blast BBQ showcase, introducing Texas to some of the North’s best-kept secrets. We’ll also be wanting to catch ScHoolboy Q; him along with Top Dawg Entertainment, is going to have a giant year. So, too, will the ever-hyped Perfect Pussy—who we caught up with on their way to Austin—who, surprisingly, are only now releasing their debut album. And if that wasn’t enough, we’ve compiled our picks, 20 in total, of names to watch at SXSW.

Still, even if Austin’s the centre of musical universe this month, it’s not the sole focus of our issue: We also deconstruct ARK Music Factory, the folks behind the mind-melting success of Rebecca Black’s “Friday” and “Chinese Food.” We mine the mind of icy post-punk king Jeremy Jay, one of the bright lights of K Records. We explore the myth of John Cage’s “4’33””, the most legendary non-song to never exist. (That’s a mouthful, huh?) And we’ve also lovingly curated a collection of Canada’s top garage punk bands, a scene that’s exploding. The magazine is free every month; download it from Google Play or iTunes at the buttons above or below.

There’s that, and there’s also so much more. As for us, we have a flight to catch to Friday Night Lights land, and if you’ll be in the Silicon Hills, come find us! We’ll get tacos. And do our best to keep Austin weird.

TEXAS FOREVER,

Team AUX
