Multiple sources are reporting this morning that Dave Brockie, better known as Gwar front-monster Oderus Urungus, has died. He was 50, and the metal world is devastated. Rightly so. No cause has yet been determined.
To the outsider, Dave Brockie was little more than a name; The man behind Oderus Urungus, the semen shooting, politician killing leader of alien metal troupe Gwar. But that was just a small part of the actual man, who to anyone who knew him came off as the genuine article. I was lucky enough to talk to Brockie a few years back and found him to be incredibly generous, inspiring and, unsurprisingly, hilarious.
He was a scholar, obsessively fascinated by tanks and the Russian front. It was his dream to visit Volgograd, something he finally realized last spring. He was an influencer. Gwar spawned many knockoffs, and in the past few years expanded his influence, writing most notably about his beloved, much maligned Washington Redskins for Metal Sucks.
Oderus Urungus was a big part of Dave Brockie’s life. Maybe the biggest. But more than anything, he was a real person. As reaction pours out of the metal world, it’s clear he meant more than a stage show ever could.
Ah shit… R.i.p Dave Brockie. One of my favorite people ever, and a good friend. 🙁 Person closest to his primal nature of all times.

My favorite memory will be while he was staying with me, my wife was making his bed and found a war torn, 20 year old teddy bear. 🙂

If there ever were a man deserving of the title of legend, it's Dave Brockie. Rest in peace, Oderus.
