Harry Styles would be remiss to compare One Direction’s musical ability and output to that of the Beatles, but in a new interview with Top of the Pops, the floppy-haired heartthrob essentially declared his boy band the most famous yet.

“[N]one of us think we’re in the same league as them music-wise,” said Styles. “We’d be total fools if we did. Fame-wise, it’s probably even bigger, but we don’t stand anywhere near them in terms of music.”

Of course, this is not necessarily something to be bothered by—whether Beatles fans like it or not, it’s likely true. One Direction are a product of their environment; a reality show super-group peddled across borders thanks to the Internet and a decidedly 21st century take on music television. Arguments that the Beatles’ infamy would have been similarly impacted by modern culture are justified but pointless—ultimately, their music speaks for itself.

“We all sat and watched the film of The Beatles arriving in America. And, to be honest, that really was like us,” said Styles. “Stepping off the plane, the girls, the madness. It was exactly the same as when we got there – just 50 years earlier.” [via NME]
