Over the last several weeks, Justin Bieber’s misadventures—the DUI, the egg tossing incident, the assault charges on a limo driver—dominated musical headlines. But we suspect that, given the perspective of weeks or months or years, the Biebz won’t be the biggest music story to emerge from the winter of 2014. (Though he’ll surely inspire countless dead pools.) That distinction will belong to Against Me! and Laura Jane Grace, who grace our cover this month.

By now, you probably know her story—after more than a decade fronting Against Me!, Grace came out in 2012 as transgender. Her journey since has been nothing short of remarkable: She’s been candid about her life to the press, continued her band despite the departure of her rhythm section, and emerged with Transgender Dysphoria Blues, the most devastatingly honest album the band’s ever written. This, without sacrificing any of Against Me’s anthemic qualities.

There’s so much to say about Transgender Dysphoria Blues—it’s a monumentally significant LP, and after reading our interview with her, we’re sure you’d agree. But, of course, it’s not the only musical narrative we touch on this month: Elsewhere, we catch up with raspy-voiced songstress Lissie at the start of her North American tour in Toronto; we get the latest from Montreal electronic experimenters Technical Kidman; we talk about Broken Bells and the Shins with frontman James Mercer; and we take you on an interactive tour of Sonic Boom, Toronto’s biggest, and some say best, record store.

As ever, this and every issue is free through the App Store on your Apple device, or the Google Play store on your Android device. Click those big-ass buttons above or below to go to the download page. We’d love you if you did.

Welcome to our first issue of 2014! Here’s to another brilliant year of fuckery. Grab this issue here:
