Living on Video is a weekly column that unearths forgotten VHS gems, Vimeo obscurities, and YouTube oddities from the musical ether—all obsessively curated by Weird Canada music editor Jesse Locke.

This isn’t an original idea. But lest you think the Buzzfeedification of the Internet has gotten to AUX, we can assure you it’s far from your average canine-music video list. Inspired by the puppy lovers in Halifax’s Dog Day, we’ve dug up eight doggy deep cuts. If you’re looking for Snoop, OK GO or the Baha Men, sniff around somewhere else!

Dog Day – “In Another Life”

Dog Day’s recently released Fade Out now has a softly psychedelic video devoted entirely to the band’s best friend. In their words, it’s “a day in the life of the fool on the hill, starring Woof Alexander.”

France Gall – “J’ai retrouvé Mon Chien”

Back in 1966, this video from yé-yé singer France Gall for the children’s program Les Raisins vert caused a bit of a stir. It’s pretty safe to say that shots of a stuffed dog being sawed in half and a pack of tongue-waggling old men would never be unleashed today.

George Clinton – “Atomic Dog”

Dog related, animated or otherwise, this is one of the freakiest videos ever. George Clinton’s 1982 electro-funk album Computer Games also includes the canine-themed cut, “Man’s Best Friend,” but “Atomic Dog” takes best in show. It should be instantly recognizable as a sample too.

Tom Tom Club – “Genius of Love”

This one’s another animated dog all-timer (alongside bouncing buildings, basketball players and butts) with one of the most ubiquitous samples in the biz.

Lunice – “Hip Pop”

Some of Rob Feulner a.k.a. Bleu Nuit Video’s finest work has been sourced from classic cartoons, and this clip for Montreal’s Lunice is no different. Bust a move with the Flashbeagle!

Look Blue Go Purple – “Cactus Cat”

This song might have a feline in the title, but it also includes a prominent shot of a dog in a handbag around the 3:00 mark. Any excuse to squeeze in this great Flying Nun band is worth it.

Julian Lynch – “North Line”

There’s something so heartwarming about dogs sticking their heads out of car windows and watching the world go by. Forget about your troubles and watch this two-minute masterpiece from Julian Lynch.

Tom Jones – “If I Only Knew”

YAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!
