A 28-year-old Suicidal Tendencies fan has reportedly died after a stage dive turned sour at a gig in Switzerland last week.

According to Blabbermouth, the crowd was unable to catch the fan after he dove off the stage during Suicidal Tendencies’ set, sustaining injuries as he fell to the ground. Venue head Pipo Kofmehl says security acted accordingly, responding alongside the emergency to unit immediately, and that while the fan was seen walking around shortly after the fall, he did “express a desire to go home.”

Kofmehl says his team insisted on hospital care; two days later, the fan suffered an epileptic seizure, succumbing to his injuries at Bern University Hospital.

If Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe‘s manslaughter trial for an injured fan taught us anything, it’s the value of a barrier, invisible or otherwise, between the stage and the crowd, but the art of stage diving still has its fans, chief among them Terror vocalist Scott Vogel.

So famous for his cries of “more stage dives” that a quote-generating website was launched in his honour, Vogel’s band was a supporting act on the show, and while it’s far from fair to associate the incident to his infamous proclamations—”I need total airborne destruction”—it does give us a chance to reopen the argument.

Should fans be allowed to stage dive? It’s an institution in punk and hardcore, but injuries and death have given cause for concern. Do fans need to pay closer attention, or are they taking their health into their own hands when they decide to jump?

Suicidal Tendencies have not commented on the incident.
