Inevitably, when you explore the fandom of any given artist in the deep, dark corners of the world wide web, you’re bound to run into a sexual obsession or two. From Larry Stylinson shippers to the more sex-obsessed side of the brony subculture, there’s no shortage of people who conflate fandom with fondle fantasies. Similarly, the band name Barenaked Ladies lends itself to a certain brand of straightforward eroticism.

Still, had you told me that Canada’s top goofy funk-folk band, equally known for their vanilla raps and the Big Bang Theory theme song, were the subject of inter-band homoerotic artwork, complete with images of the members making out or snuggling in post-coital bliss on the couch, I simply wouldn’t believe you. And for that, my friends, I’d be wrong. Because hand-drawn, homoerotic Barenaked Ladies fan art exists. And it’s a thing of beauty.

The bulk (okay, all) of the erotic Barenaked Ladies fan art comes from a DeviantArt user named purple-muffin027. But she’s done an excellent job of establishing a world where all of the band’s members can’t seem to stop making out with one another, and she’s not alone. In fact, she’s a contributor to The Doot Bap Page — a site that focuses on telling stories about the erotic mishaps of the adult-contemporary Canuck pop goofs. Before you dig into some heavy reading, however, let’s have a look at some erotic BNL fan art.

1.

It all started with some Photoshop art inspired by a joke kiss between Ed Robertson and Steven Page in a Barenaked Ladies interview. She chose to immortalize the moment through art, adding some cool filters and a particularly heartfelt lyric from the band’s song “Box Set.”

2.

The Photoshop phase also included a tribute to Barenaked Ladies member and former Rheostatic Kevin Hearn. Aside from a drop-shadow on the killer metallic font, Hearn’s name is repeated in myriad fonts in the background, giving it a cool urban look suited to the band’s occasional hip-hop flirtations.

3.

Then, the inter-band eroticism started to develop. Here’s an early sketch entitled “Almost Kiss,” which shows the band’s Kevin Hearn and Ed Robertson gazing deeply into each other’s eyes, battling their strange new desires and wondering what could be if they’d give in to their most base of urges. “I know. I’m kinda creepy,” our artist writes on the caption.

4.

Proving that true love can’t be stifled, however, the next image (titled “Ed and Kev”) sees the two members allow nature to take its course as they engage in gentle osculation.

5.

“I really like this pairing, I guess,” purple-muffin027 writes on her piece entitled “Together.” The image is a zoomed out look at Kevin and Ed’s loving embrace, with Ed gingerly caressing Kevin’s hip.

6.

Here’s another shot of Ed and Kev digging for gold in each other’s mouths. This one’s called “Getting into it,” and if we’re being honest with ourselves, we’re really getting into it as well.

7.

Kevin Hearn’s not the only one getting a piece of Ed Robertson, however. Here we see the frontman locking lips with a befuddled Steven Page in a piece fittingly titled “A Surprise from Ed.”

8.

Ed, you tease! Here we see him swapping spit with Steven Page, then switching over to Kevin Hearn. What a good boy.

9.

All that smooching really wore the members of the Barenaked Ladies out. As such, Ed Robertson and Kevin Hearns enjoy a post-coital snuggle in this romantic piece called “On the Couch.”

10.

Taking a break from all the sexy times, our artistic heroine focuses in on the many facial expressions of Steven Page in an image called “25 Steves.” “I call him Steve, based on Steven Page,” she clarifies.

11.

Another segue from outright eroticism, though I’d argue that the five members of the group are looking rather dapper in this piece called “BNL Doodle.”

12.

This Barenaked Ladies doodle called “Cups” features a double entendre about Kevin Hearns’s, er, doodle. “I think they’re all a little jealous about the size of Kevin’s… cup,” purple-muffin027 writes.

13.

This “Lost Doodle” features more subtle eroticism from the group as they hang out in various scenes, from napping together to showering together. Steven Page shows off his bruised belly, while Kevin describes his love of the song “One Week.” [Click image for larger version.]

14.

This piece, titled “Artsy Steve,” is a watercolour painting run through a Photoshop filter. “I think it looks cooler,” writes purple-muffin027. We couldn’t agree more.

15.

As if the situation didn’t need any more complexity, here we have a dramatic comic strip called “Outside” where Steven Page confesses his lifelong love for Jim Creeggan, who appears reluctant. The story is taken from The Doot Bap Page, a homepage for erotic Barenaked Ladies fan fiction.

16.

In “Outside 2,” we find out that Jim simply doesn’t feel the same way about Steve, offering up the standard dating rejection replies in the second panel. Stop wasting his time, Jim!

17.

Another comic strip called “Our Problems” sees Steven Page’s ex-wife catch him cheating with Ed Robertson. “I don’t stalk Steve enough to know what his ex-wife looks like,” the artist admits. We still think she did a great job.

18.

In “Our Problems 2,” Ed and Steve confess their love to each other, much to Jim’s dismay.

19.

“Feeling Sick” demonstrates that point after the honeymoon period, as Ed complains to Steven that he’s not feeling so well. Of course, Steven finds the fun in it all, pointing out Ed’s barely concealed erection. [Click image for larger version.]

20.

The flirtation works, as the two talk dirty to each other and share a smooch in “Feeling Sick 2.”

21.

Of course, one must always remember that sexual activity can result in some consequences, as laid out in this masterpiece entitled “Steven Page is Having a Baby.”
