Young Galaxy called their 2011 album Shapeshifting, and while it represented a stylistic departure for the formerly indie rock-leaning group, it took until 2013’s Ultramarine for their transformation to fully take hold. Produced in Gothenburg, Sweden, with Studio’s Dan Lissvik, Young Galaxy finally took the full plunge into electronic pop, merging their songwriting savvy with the new musical textures. Previously splitting vocal duties with Stephen Ramsay, Catherine McCandless is now the band’s sole singer, an additional subtle change that only accentuates the smooth textures of much of Ultramarine. Drawing from their home base of Montreal as much as the pop-obsessed Swedish musical landscape, Young Galaxy seem to have finally found themselves with Ultramarine.
