Eminem gave us one of the greatest GIFs of the year on ESPN this Saturday, but he wasn't high. Here's what we think really happened.

As expected, Eminem’s “Berzerk” is already getting itself into commercial productions with ESPN announcing that it’ll be part of its Saturday night college football broadcasts. To celebrate this news, and to tease the song’s new video, Eminem turned out one hell of a weird appearance with broadcasters Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit during the Notre Dame and Michigan date.

ESPN announced this weekend that Eminem’s “Berzerk” will be its new college football anthem, and to celebrate had Marshall Mathers on with Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit at halftime of the Notre Dame vs Michigan game. The results were… weird.

The immediate reaction on the internet was that Shady was back on that stuff; that he was stoned or drunk or high on goofballs. And while Eminem himself said that live TV freaks him out, the guy was obviously playing the part. While we’re thankful his ploy gave us this GIF, there’s a reason for it.

Basically, the dude was totally lost. He seemed to be doing anything to distract from actually having to talk about sports. Unlike most MCs, he’s not great at talking himself up, and clearly his football knowledge doesn’t extend to the betting line. When Musburger asked Mathers if his hometown Detroit Lions would cover the spread against the Minnesota Vikings, he stared aimlessly into the camera before bullshitting a canned response. He had no answer—not because he was under some mysterious influence, but because he clearly had no idea what “4.5” meant.

For sports fans, this reaction might have been better than the first one:

Eminem? More like UMINEM. Ha! By the way, the Lions covered the spread beating the Minnesota Vikings 34-24.

UPDATE: Here’s Eminem’s new video for Berzerk.
