Stephen Colbert got the short end of an exclusivity contract Daft Punk had with MTV when the French duo neglected to tell him about it until the day before they were scheduled to appear on his show.

Not that he didn’t handle the snub with his usual panache.

“We booked Click and Clack over here about a month ago,” joked Colbert. “Apparently, Daft Punk are going to make a surprise appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards. Don’t tell anyone, because fun fact: no one told me until two o’clock yesterday.”

Left to his own devices without the biggest get of his annual Stephest Colbchella, Colbert enlisted the help of Jimmy Fallon, Hugh Laurie, Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and some of the Breaking Bad cast to replace “the artists formerly booked as Daft Punk.”

It was magical, and it happened because Comedy Central, which airs The Colbert Report is owned by Viacom. They also own MTV.

Robin Thicke ended up filling in, performing that song he has. You know the one.
