PREMIERE: Listen to the new Paper Lions single, "My Friend"

Charlottetown indie-rockers Paper Lions are set to release their debut album My Friends on August 20 (via their own Fountain Pop Records), a snapshot of the band growing up as childhood friends in PEI, and AUX is premiering lead single “My Friend” below.

Produced by Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers, Mother Mother) on the other side of the country in Vancouver, bassit Rob MacPhee reflects on the personal nostalgia that “My Friend” touches on.

“One of our favourite things to do as kids was to make home movies,” says MacPhee (whose brother John sings and plays guitar in the band). “Our mother had this gigantic camcorder, and we would get all made up, build elaborate sets, and then shoot a vaguely themed, completely unscripted movie.”

He continues: “Household rules were loose during filming; rolling up paper lunch bags and smoking them like cigars in my parent’s basement wasn’t uncommon. The smoke was so thick, you could barely see the flashes of cracking cap guns. When we finished filming, we’d rewind the tape and start again. It’s funny to think that nobody ever really watched the final versions. My Friends is, in part, a tribute to those lost movies.”

Paper Lions will play an all-ages album release show on the album’s release date (August 20) at Toronto’s Rivoli (additional U.S. tour dates are listed below), and you can pre-order My Friends on iTunes now. Check out “My Friend” below.
