Toronto’s Weaves is made up of former Rattail singer Jasmyn Burke and Sweet Thing/Dwayne Gretzky/etc. member Morgan Waters and together they make delightfully strange slacker-pop. Here is how they’ll be spending their NXNE.

AUX: Say you’re playing host for a day to an out-of-town band/artist in T.O. for NXNE. Where do you take them?

Weaves vocalist Jasmyn Burke: Hmm, well they would probably be poor, so I think the best thing for any traveling band is always a nice warm shower and perhaps a home-cooked meal. Something hearty! But besides that I would say a classic sight-seeing trip and a trip to Toronto Island.

Is there anything you’re looking forward to seeing or adamant about avoiding at NXNE?

NXNE is always a great time to see your friends all play in one condensed week. We’re playing quite a bit, but I always love the more DIY BBQ shows. They’re just quintessential Summer days, drinking beer, playing music and sitting in the sun. Posi. As far as music, I’m not too sure who is playing but I heard Ludacris. Great. Moon King. Michael Rault. Studs. Tangiers reunion. My youth. Odonis Odonis. Word.

What’s the best and worst thing about a festival like NXNE? Does it compare to others you’ve played or attended?

The best: Friends old and new getting to see what everyone is up to life wise/music wise/human wise. The worst: Permeating hangover and overall exhaustion when the festival is done. But overall can’t complain, I mean it’s playing music and dressing in fun clothes and meeting babes, riiiiiight. Haha.

Who’s your favourite Toronto artist, and why?

That’s a tough one. I don’t know if I can pinpoint one in particular, but there are collectives/artists/media/labels that I think are releasing and curating music and art that an international audience is starting to pay attention to. “Canada rocks,” haha. Buzz Records, Daps, Pretty Pretty Records, Hand Drawn Dracula, Bad Day Magazine, Weird Canada, Minnow Bathers. It’s all really exciting.

Tell us why your show is the show everyone should make sure to see.

I mean people don’t have to come if they don’t want to, but they just may like it if they do!

What else is Weaves up to that we should know about?

Well, Morgan and I started working together in October and have recently started recording the entire full length at both Candle Recording Studio and Echo Valley. We’re really excited about this summer and fall as we’ve been working hard and will have some great stuff lined up over the next few months to share with the humans!

Weaves play at the Scion Sessions/Hand Drawn Dracula/AUX.TV party on Friday at 7pm, and at Blx Box on Friday, June 14 @ 10pm. For full details check out the NXNE Schedule and Weaves’ Facebook page.
