Diane D. is a 53-year-old social media communications advisor from Palm Beach, Florida who credits attending a Waka Flocka Flame concert with ending her marriage, and in turn, saving her life.

In a post on her website, Diane explained that as a social media advisor, she noticed that hip-hop artists had a masterful handle on how to self-promote via Twitter. Before long, she was following more rappers and hip-hop bloggers than social media experts, reviewing records, and blogging about up-and-coming artists. Diane blogged about Waka Flocka Flame as being one musician who gets social media right—he does have over 1.3 million Twitter followers—and Waka re-tweeted her. Suddenly, Diane welcomed an influx of followers from the hip-hop world, including Waka himself. To this day, the two exchange DMs, and re-tweet each other on the regular.

As Diane immersed herself deeper into the hip-hop community, her husband at the time did not approve. They were already having marriage problems, and to make things more complicated, he hated rap music. When Waka Flocka was set to come to town and perform, her husband made it known that he wouldn’t forbid (ha!) Diane from going, but he would prefer that she didn’t go. She writes: “He basically implied that (and I’m paraphrasing) “many black men would be putting their bodies in close proximity to mine.” Also, “since I was so enamored of Waka, if Waka asked, I might go out clubbing with him and end up doing something I’d regret.”

Then and there, Diane decided she would go to the concert by herself, and that anyone who holds her back from doing something she loves had no place in her life. Diane attended the concert, met Waka for a photo-op, and had one of the best nights of her life. She made the decision to live “life without looking over [her] shoulder or being beholden to an immature man.” They’ve been divorced for two years, and she “couldn’t be happier.”

For Diane, the only song in her heart “will always be a song by Waka Flocka Flame.” Read the full life-affirming story over at her website.
