The Sour DJs

Matthew Jones and Patrick Doody, collectively known as Niagara-based DJ/production duo The Sour DJs, have only been making music together for two years, but their profile in Canada’s EDM scene is rapidly rising, thanks to a crucial co-sign from electro house giant Benny Benassi on episode #170 of his new radio mix. Their aggressive and grinding approach to electro house makes their live sets unforgettable, and with big plans brewing for 2013, you can expect to hear a lot more from this dynamic production duo.

AUX: What was your introduction to DJing? What made you want to start?

The Sour DJs: We met at the Guvernment Nightclub in Toronto about 5 years ago, and it was that building that opened our eyes and ears to the world of Djing. Matt played in many orchestras over the years and he saw the DJ as the conductor; and the crowd was the orchestra. With every track he played the “orchestra” responded accordingly. Within a few months of meeting we purchased turntables, and after a few aliases we formed the Sour DJs. After investing in some studio gear and producing for a few months, we got our first Beatport release and haven’t looked back since.

Where are you from and what’s the scene like for a DJ in your hometown?

We live in Niagara, and the scene here is strong and growing faster than ever before. There is a core group of DJs that have been doing events here for years, as well as a younger generation that continue to push the various electronic genres in new directions.

Who/what are your main influences, and why?

Benny Benassi is a huge influence for both of us. He is one of the pioneers of modern dance music and successfully created his own sound that is recognized around the world. To have him play one of our tracks in his weekly radio show was a huge inspiration to keep producing music, setting goals, and putting in the countless hours in the studio.

In terms of DJs, Hardwell is an obvious influence for us. His mixing style is unbelievable and he always has the crowd guessing and wanting more. Donald Glaude is another huge influence for us too. His turntable skills are something no one can compete with.

Best party you’ve ever been to and why?

Hard to say…there have been so many good ones! Decadence at the Guvernment is definitely our favourite party of the year. But opening for deadmau5 on New Year’s let us cross my number one bucket list item off so that was unreal.

Why is it important for Canada to have an event like Bud Light Sensation?

Events like Bud Light Sensation are going to continue to push the scene further here in Canada. This is another high caliber event that brings some of the best DJs in the world and an incredible amount of media attention to the electronic music scene. Hopefully this will help open the opportunity for more events like these in more cities across the country in the future.
