Hip-hop and censorship have a a storied and complicated relationship that’s rooted in fear, racism, and control, but since the radio and the regulatory bodies that control it hold considerably less power over artists in an Internet age, it’s becoming hard to see censored versions of hip-hop songs as anything but hilarious.

Far be it for us to judge anyone who enjoys the music, but prefers it without the expletive-laden hooks — hey, different strokes, right? That said, these sanitized radio edits of popular songs are so hilariously intrusive, it makes the songs damn near impossible to comprehend, let alone enjoy. Consider it the musical equivalent to those hilarious “dubbed for cable telelvision” censored versions of movies.

A$AP Rocky – “Fuckin’ Problems” feat. 2 Chainz, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar

Original Lyric: “I love bad bitches, that’s my fuckin’ problem. And yeah, I like to fuck, I’ve got a fuckin’ problem.”

Radio Edit: “I love bad bad, that’s my that’s my problem / And yeah, I like to (TRUE), I got a [pause] problem.”

Kudos to the Pretty MFer for changing “at least a nigga nigga rich” to “at least Hilfiger rich,” though.

Trinidad Jame$ – “All Gold Everything”

Original Lyric: “And this song for them fuck niggas who hating on you this summer (fuck em) / Talk shit behind your back, but won’t say shit in public, fuck em.”

Radio Edit: “This song for them lames who hating on you this summer. Talk behind your back but won’t say [sheerrrnnnnp] in public [frrrmrp] ’em.”

Is anyone else surprised “popped a molly, I’m sweatin'” doesn’t need to be censored? If so, “hot tamale, I’m sweatin’!” might have been a good option.

Waka Flocka Flame – “Hard In The Paint”

Original Lyric: “I go hard in the motherfuckin’ paint, nigga. Leave you stankin’ nigga, what the fuck you thinkin’ nigga?”

Radio Edit: “I go hard in the m– p-p-paint. Leave you stankin’. What you thinkin?”

I guess he still gets his message across. Jump to 1:23 for a long section of silence. Waka Flocka Flame’s lyrics refuse to be sanitized.

Chief Keef – “I Don’t Like”

Original Lyric: “A fuck nigga, that’s that shit I don’t like, nah / A snitch nigga, that’s that shit I don’t like, nah.”

Radio Edit: “I [frrrmmmp], that’s that [shh] I don’t like, nah. A snitch [frrrmp], that’s that [shh] I don’t like, nah.”

This censorship is making it really difficult to figure out what it is exactly that Chief Keef doesn’t like. From what I can tell, he doesn’t like pop. More of a juice man, I guess.

Papa Roach – “Last Resort”

Original Lyric: “Suffocation, no breathing / Don’t give a fuck if I cut my arm bleeding.”

Radio Edit: “Suffocation, no breathing / Don’t give a…my arm…”

To be fair, this isn’t hip-hop, and it was probably never listenable.
