Nothing like a little Canadian music industry controversy to spend our whole morning arguing on the internet about!

Slagging Off (or Honest Reviews?) is a Tumblr dedicated to posting, yep, “honest reviews” of Canadian bands, starting with digging through the roster of endless CMW performers in Toronto this week. It’s larger mission, in short, seems to be to want to right the wrongs (i.e. culture of mediocrity) that boosterism and politeness and has caused in the Canadian music industry.

“Even if we take one awful band off the road this summer, this project was a success,” “they” say in their sorta mission statement.

Reactions have been pretty much split between digging the honest criticism where it truly does so sorely lack, and hating the negativity (and the anonymity). I love the idea, and hate the execution—aside from the one bold and out-of-line claim calling Exclaim! magazine “racist,” it’s so far just a bunch of sneering, entitled, miss-the-mark attempts at jokes. Zzzz.

This most recent post, though, breaking down the problematic reality of a festival like CMW, is a little closer to how this could be an interesting project.

Have a look and let us know what you think. Necessary? Or does it amount to little more than trolling?
