Bands get all the attention. How about a laugh? The CMF Comedy Showcase takes place all week at Tallboys (838 Bloor Street West). Here’s our Q&A with Toronto’s Steph Tolev.

AUX: Tell us why everyone in Toronto needs to come see your CMF showcase.

Steph Tolev: Well, If you like being fully entertained and enjoy seeing someone full of energy, I highly suggest you check me out. I love making fun of myself and others and like being pretty silly. I have no filter and don’t care about looking like a fool.

Is performing as part of a music festival like CMW fun? Or is it the worst? You can tell us.

I think it’s a lot of fun. You get a way different audience who isn’t used to seeing live comedy, so it makes you work harder. It’s great making hipsters uncomfortable.

Who’s your favourite Toronto comic and why?

I would say Tim Gilbert. He makes me me laugh constantly. I can hear his jokes over and over and laugh harder every time. He always brings a new energy to the stage and his riffs are amazing.

Who’s your favourite Toronto band/artist and why?

Death From Above 1979. I saw them when they first started and fell in love. Their sound is so powerful and unique.

What else are you up to that we should know about?

I am currently doing shows in L.A. I just opened up for Eugene Mirman, and my sketch troupe LadyStache is top four in the SiriusXM radio competition sketch-off where we could win a full sketch album recording. Besides that, I am usually eating something very similar to a cookie.

Steph Tolev performs on Friday, March 22, and Sunday, March 24. Check the CMW schedule for full details.
