Bands get all the attention. How about a laugh? The CMF Comedy Showcases takes place all week at Tallboys (838 Bloor Street West). Here’s our Q&A with Toronto’s beloved Nick Flanagan.

Tell us why everyone in Toronto needs to come see your CMF showcase.

My showcase set will be magical for a number of reasons. That number is three. 1.) It will make you drunk without needing to buy a beer/Zema/Rev. 2.) It will remind you of just how neurotic one man can be about his body. 3.) You will think of a number and I will correctly guess that number. But more than anything else, it will make you feel better about the fact that you chose to go to university and endure crippling debt instead of stepping in front of a microphone and babble a mixture of puns, self criticism, and vivid yet disgusting imagery.

Is performing as part of a music festival like CMW fun? Or is it the worst? You can tell us.

It’s fun. I’m sure the show itself will be fine—the whole show is dedicated to comedy and it’s not like a band is playing in the same room at the same time. That might be a problem. Opening for a band has a higher chance of being awful, because it’s often an audience that doesn’t expect comedy and is at a rock show so you just know they think they’re sooooooo coooooool, what with the piercings. But life could be so much worse. I could be performing at the bottom of a well, where even if people laugh at my jokes, I won’t be able to hear them due to acoustics. Or I could be an acoustic guitar, getting constantly fingerpicked by untalented whiners.

Who’s your favourite Toronto comic and why?

There’s an embarassment of solid comics in Toronto right now. In terms of more established people, I would say Sean Cullen, Mike Wilmot, and Mark Forward are all very much worth seeing. In terms of more up-and-coming comics, “the showcasers” as I call them, I love all the comedians involved in Laugh Sabbath, Todd Graham, Mark Little, Hunter Collins, Steph Tolev, Chris Locke, Alex Pavone…I could really go on with names. Standups are constantly working hard to get better in Toronto. Norm Macdonald.

Who’s your favourite Toronto band/artist and why?

Frank D’angelo! He’s Canada’s only true rock star. Look him up! I’m being sarcastic, but he is from Hamilton, which has produced it’s fair share of good rock bands. Teenage Head, for one. I hesitate to pick a current rock band because I’m pretty out of the loop of late. People from the band I used to be in have bands and from what I’ve heard they’re pretty good: Hassler, Valley Boys, and Farang. Also, Dirty Ghosts!

What else are you up to that we should know about?

I’m switching homes constantly, so that’s been interesting. Tim Gilbert and I made a video that we’re trying to get made into a funded web series. We think it will be totally awesome if it we get to make it. I also co-host the Danko Jones podcast, which is always a blast because we interview neat comics, artists, and musicians. Otherwise I’m just trying to make a funny comedy act that will entertain the masses, or at least the lower end of the masses. But mostly I’m just renting places for a month and then going to another place because I get ashamed of the amount of drain hair I create.

Nick Flanagan performs on Wednesday, March 20, at 8:45 p.m. Check the CMW schedule for full details.
