M.I.A.’s upcoming album, Matangi, has been delayed from its original December 2012 release date to April 15th of this year, and the reason is apparently pretty stupid: the label thought it was “too positive”.

According to an interview with Gold Coast (via Pitchfork), M.I.A. says she’s actually still working on the album, which should now be out on the Tamil new year.

“At the moment, I’ve been told it’s too positive. So we’re having a bit of an issue at the label,” she says. “They’re like, ‘You need to darken it up a bit.’ I don’t know what it is but as soon as I work that out… I’m taking my time to decide what they mean.”

She also says that the label built her up as “public enemy number 1,” and that their reaction is a reflection of that.

We’ll see how this unfolds over the next few months.
