Each month, tons of new music from many taste-spanning genres is released into a fast-consuming, unforgiving market; it can be tough to get a handle on what’s new before it’s on to the next. In an attempt to highlight the standout releases, at the end of each month, AUX staff re-cap the month in Punk, Metal, Indie/Pop/Rock, Hip Hop, Electronic, and Pop with the top five releases in each. Consider it your cheat sheet for year-end lists.

Top 5 Punk Releases:
October

Metz – Metz

Like the Jesus Lizard but even more concise, or Southern Ontario hardcore legends Shotmaker but bigger in scope, Metz’ long-awaited full-length debut finds a way of capturing their infamous (in their hometown of Toronto) live show by getting creative with sounds and textures in a way few of their peers are capable of. This feels like a Metz show, even when it doesn’t sound exactly like one – but the pummelling, unending chaos and lockstep rhythmic perfection provide a recognizable foundation on which the layers of violence are applied. (Sub Pop)

Luther – Let’s Get You Somewhere Else

Taking ’90s emo and stripping it of the stuff that makes you uncomfortable as an adult in 2012, Luther have built their sound out of updated references to the music of their youth – if you remember Moneen, you’ll love this record.

Hostage Calm – Please Remain Calm

Much was made of the stylistic shift from Hostage Calm’s standard hardcore debut to their monstrously poppy and adventurous self-titled follow-up. Please Remain Calm continues down the same path, pushing further into un-punk territory and bringing more Phil Spector and Beach Boys influences to the forefront of their pop-punk sound. It’s the full-on a capella song that let’s you know this ain’t your father’s hardcore band. (Run For Cover)

Trash Talk – 119

Trash Talk’s rise to hipster-approved hardcore superstars (on Odd Future’s new record label, no less) is kind of confusing but who cares when they’re still making ripping hardcore songs like “My Rules” and “Exile on Broadway.” Listen to it while you bike through the city in the dead of winter and smash a car with your lock when it cuts you off and then mosh like fuck. (Odd Future)
Titus Andronicus – Local Business
Still being the best. (XL)

Out in November: New records from Green Day, Night Marchers, the Evens, and more.
