Leading up to the presidential election four years ago, the pop-cultural momentum behind Barack Obama was staggering. For a rapper, name-dropping Barack Obama in your lyrics was more important than actually voting for him, because it gave the artist a chance to be a part of the “Yes We Can” campaign. Four years later, there are almost 500 search results for “Obama” on RapGenius, and name-checking the POTUS on your track isn’t what the cool kids are doing.

So, how are the cool kids of hip-hop pledging their support for Obama in 2012? By trashing his opponent, naturally.

Here are five cases in which some of the most popular hip-hop artists of today fire shots at Mitt Romney in their lyrics.

Kanye West – “To The World” feat. R. Kelly & Teyana Taylor

“I’m just trying to protect my stacks / Mitt Romney don’t pay no tax, Mitt Romney don’t pay no tax”

Context: In the lead-off track from Cruel Summer, Kanye West draws attention to much-publicized speculation on Mitt Romney’s alleged tax avoidance. Romney eventually released only two years of tax records, indicating that he paid 13.9 percent in 2010 and 15.3 percent in 2011. Kanye West made $35 million dollars last year. I’m glad someone is looking out for the 99%.

Rick Ross – “No Worries” feat. Detail & Lil Wayne

“My T-shirt cost 15, my chain ran 1.3 / That champagne I piss out, Cristal, fuck Mitt Romney”

Context: This is just a throw-away lyrical jab from a throw-away mixtape. It’s hard to imagine Rick Ross’ thought process while crafting this line, but it had to be something like this: “I make a lot of money. Speaking of dudes who make a lot of money, fuck Mitt Romney.”

Kendrick Lamar – “K104 Halloween Freestyle”

“We gonna get back to this little punk, he’s crap
Mitt Romney, show ’em how to rap
Matter fact, this freestyle is just dedicated to him
You’re homeboys right now with Slim
Your chances, you’re not gonna win
You need to go back to where you came from, boy
It’s the ruler of the game
Obama, vote now homeboy, he’s got game”

Context: During a promotional stop at K104 in Dallas, Kendrick dropped a four minute freestyle, incorporating words that were thrown at him on flash cards by the DJ. When the DJ tossed him “Mitt Romney,” Kendrick fortune-tellered the shit out of today’s election. Why listen to the pollsters when Kendrick has already called it?

Lil Wayne – “Mercy” feat. Nicki Minaj

“‘I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney’ / You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy
(Nicki Minaj)

Context: When Lil Wayne finally dropped Dedication 4 in September, everyone was talking about Nicki Minaj’s verse on the “Mercy” remix. Nicki later clarified that what initially seemed like a Romney endorsement was actually a jab at the ol’ Mitt-ster. The first line is rapped from the perspective of the aforementioned “lazy bitches,” and the second line is Nicki’s official political opinion. Close call, guys.

Slaughterhouse – “Back The Fuck Up”

“Of the House Gang, call it the crib, Mami
These niggas running trying to get in our seat, a bunch of Mitt Romneys
But I stand at the podium with the fifth by me
Screaming out ‘Yes we can, open yo shit Papi’”

(Joell Ortiz)

Context: Before you get all clever and suggest that Joell Ortiz isn’t anyone’s favourite rapper, BOOM. Here, Ortiz positions Mitt Romney as the poster-boy for seat-snatching. He gets extra points here for applying the “Yes We Can” chant to threatening someone with murder.
