The pop culture fallout from their engagement continues with word today (via MTV) that Avril Lavigne’s going to cover future hubby’s Nickelback track “How You Remind Me” for a new anime movie.

As weird as it is for Lavigne to be covering a song her fiancé wrote about his ex-girlfriend, that she’s doing it for a cartoon movie about a guy named Monkey who becomes a pirate after body turns to rubber is a whole ‘nother level of weird.

But the real kicker is that this could potentially push the song back into the popular landscape. Granted, the way we listen to music has changed significantly since 2001, with radio taking a back seat to streams and downloads, but it’s hard to forget just how inescapable Nickelback’s version of the song was when it was making its dominating run through the radio.

The track was named by Nielsen Soundscan as the most played song on American radio between 2001 and 2009 with over 1 million plays in that time, and you wouldn’t be wrong to think the number is even more inflated in Canada.

One Piece Film Z is unlikely to be an anime crossover success, but everyone’s fascination with “Chavril” does mean that the movie’s niche-y demographic won’t stop people (like us, probably) from sharing the song when it comes out. So I guess, ultimately, this is a long way of saying we’re sorry. Because when Avril’s cover comes out, we’re probably going to share it. How could we not?
