The war between celebrity judgment-based music shows "The Voice" and "X Factor", which both return this week, may be over before it even started. Which is a shame, because I don't think anyone would have minded seeing Cee Lo Green and Simon Powell got at it with bayonets. NBC's "Voice" saw its ratings fall 39 percent from last year's debut, and 15 percent from its average last year, a very poor re-debut.

The war between celebrity judgment-based music shows “The Voice” and “X Factor”, which both returned to TV this week, may be over before it even started. Which is a shame, because I don’t think anyone would have minded seeing Cee Lo Green and Simon Powell go at it with bayonets. NBC’s “Voice” saw its ratings fall 39 percent from last season’s premiere, and 15 percent from its average last year, a very poor re-debut.

And the day after the less-than-impressive showing, judge/coach/what-have-you Christina Aguilera announced that she wouldn’t be returning to the show next season, in order to focus on her music and not at all because she’s getting out while the getting is, in fact, good. She announced a new album, Lotus, with the lead single “Your Body” to be imminently released. Said she, “I just need to do my thing for a minute then I can come back and be that much better of a coach.” Which is also what my old little league baseball coach “Big” Billy told our team before retreating to his truck to slam back a few of what he referred to as “beerskies.”

For Aguilera, it’s a chance to make a clean break before she becomes the star of a cancelled show. After all, between “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Voice,” one of them’s going to have to vacate the airwaves eventually. But “The Voice” also watched their competitors gank their gimmick of staffing the judging panel with hot, current stars, so this could be a golden opportunity to bolster their cast next season with someone with a little more juice than Aguilera. What’s my girl Taylor Swift up to? Something wholesome, I bet.
