And he might be right.

Lil B is easily excitable, striking a chord somewhere along the lines of a super positive hip hop Andrew WK, and his latest pet project is a rock song he teased before posting it nearly 20 consecutive times on his Facebook page. He said “California Girl” was going to make history before posting it, and once it went up, the video ended with its final frames claiming the same.

“California Girl” is far from a good song, but then that’s kind of Lil B’s shtick. It’s undeniably catchy, its hook no sloppier than the current barrage of lazily sung beach anthems pouring out of the armpits of every California suburb, and when it comes to nonchalant enthusiasm nobody does it better. There’s always uncertainly as to whether Lil B is laughing with us or at us, and his first full foray into rock music carries the trend to the tenth degree.

Unlike Lil Wayne’s “Rebirth,” there’s nothing explicitly terrible about “California Boy,” but the underlying sense that we’re all being trolled is unavoidable. Moreover, that we’re okay with it is even more apparent. At this point, Lil B can do no wrong, because even when he does, it works.
