Aside from the southern-based trap music that has ruined our lives, gangsta rap has taken a backseat to a less murderous, more widely relatable strain of rap. Rappers don’t pump slugs into your chest anymore, they steal your girl. They’re not selling drugs anymore, they’re doing them. Things have changed, unless we’re talking about Freddie Gibbs, who over the last 5 years, has slowly stepped in to fill the void of the classic gangsta rapper, and he’s become quite dependable.

Here we have yet another reputable mixtape released by Gibbs. There has been a few conversations about a debut album release but if he’s going to be dropping tapes like this, that seems a bit fleeting. Gibbs’ ideal rapping voice and his sharp subtly-Midwest flow hold down a batch of tightly produced beats for Baby Face Killa. Then a bunch of guests show up, including an obvious influence on Gibbs, Krayzie of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, who gets paired up with SpaceGhostPurrp to help Gibbs talk about smoking da weed up on “Kush Cloud.” Hearing these guys, of varying ages, from three different cities (Gibbs from Gary, Krayzie Bone from Cleveland and SpaceGhostPurrp from Miami) have such great chemistry on a track recalls the impact gangsta rap has had on hip-hop. It’s no wonder Freddie Gibbs won’t give up on it.
