The circumstances surrounding Weezer’s Pinkerton are curious to say the least, and not just because it’s quietly gone from a critically reviled disaster into what many feel might be the band’s magnum opus.

Coming off the highs of their massively successful self-titled debut, the band decided to follow things up with Songs from the Black Hole, a massive concept rock record intended to be taken in the same vein of a Pink Floyd album, complete with a full cast of characters and a sprawling story.

The idea was eventually scrapped, with some of its songs getting tweaked for Pinkerton and the rest scattering across demo collections and file sharing sites.

But yesterday a bunch of ambitious fans did what everyone was secretly hoping: they put it all together, recorded everything properly and released it. With a huge cast of characters and musicians, Operation Space Opera is fucking fantastic, a must download for Weezer fans still wondering what could have been. It’s free and you’ve got nothing to lose, just make sure you download it to get the full, gapless track effect.
