Is there a more aptly named artist than Tom Waits?

The gravel-voiced troubadour has always done things on his own schedule. He waited seven years to follow up 2004’s Real Gone, and ten months after that to start promoting the album on Late Night talk shows.

Then, last week, he sent out three separate and weird e-mails telling fans to wait for August 7th. The first had Waits, wearing an eye-patch and swinging a sword and was titled “Permission to Come Aboard?” That was followed a few days later by a shot of Waits underwater, being chased by what looks like sharks made out of cinderblock with the header “I Breathe Better Underwater.”

The last tease came yesterday and featured Waits, uh…here’s the photo.

.

The point is that these ended up being screencaps from his new video for “Hell Broke Luce,” which was released today as promised. Directed by Matt Mahurin, it’s exactly the kind of brilliantly surreal experience you’d expect from one of last year’s best albums. We guess you could say it was… worth the wait. (sorry).
