Though he’s an accomplished producer, songwriter, and artist, The-Dream has never been known for his lyrical depth. Clearly, the only way to truly understand The-Dream is by filtering his lyrics through a dream dictionary. With a little help from our friends at DreamMoods.com, here are ten of The-Dream’s most poignant lyrics, accompanied by detailed dream assessments.

Though he’s an accomplished producer, songwriter, and artist, The-Dream (a.k.a. Terius Youngdell Nash) has never been known for his lyrical depth. His dominance in the realm of slow-jam R&B is arguably overshadowed by his production and writing credits (“Umbrella” by Rihanna, “Baby” by Justin Bieber, and “Run The World (Girls)” by Beyoncé), and yet no one treats his lyrical work with the reverence it deserves. Clearly, the only way to truly understand The-Dream is by filtering his lyrics through a dream dictionary. With a little help from our friends at DreamMoods.com, here are ten of The-Dream’s most poignant lyrics, accompanied by detailed dream assessments.

Lyric: “Put your lips on my lips / When I dip, you dip, we dip.” – The-Dream, “Roc” (2012)

Dream Dictionary: The mention of lips signifies sensuality, sex, love, and romance, especially if they were pursed.

When The-Dream wrote this lyric, he had kissin’ on the brain. All of that smooching necessitates pursed lips aplenty, which tells us that The-Dream’s love life was at the forefront of his mind when he was working on “Roc.” Terius has had three well-publicized relationships that we know of, including a marriage to R&B singer Nivea, a marriage to singer/actress Christina Milian, and most scandalously, a relationship with his personal assistant that led to the unravelling of his marriage with Milian. He has three children with Nivea, and a child with Milian. We’re not sure whose lips he’s smoochin’ on lately, but it’s safe to say that at any given moment, someone out there is feeling the passionate embrace of The-Dream’s lip-smackin’ love-slurps.

Lyric: “Sold on her like keys / Feelin’ all on her like keys, so it seems.” – The-Dream, “Dope Bitch” (2012)

Dream Dictionary: To see a key in your dream symbolizes opportunities, access, control, secrets, freedom, knowledge or responsibilities.

The-Dream has never been one to shy away from an opportunity. While writing songs for Britney Spears’ 2003 album In The Zone, Nash impressed Spears with a song called “Me Against The Music.” At the time, he wasn’t an established songwriter, so he spent overnight studio sessions alone, running back and forth from the booth to the control room while laying down scratch vocals. Britney liked the song so much that she invited Madonna to sing on the duet, and made it the first single from In The Zone.

Lyric: “I just wanna give you what you deserve / Round the clock, on the dot, everything I got.” – The-Dream, “Body Work” (2011)

Dream Dictionary: If you see a clock in your dream, it signifies the importance of time in your waking life. Your mind may be preoccupied with deadlines, and it may be time to speed up on fulfilling your obligations.

As of late, The-Dream has been struggling with deadlines, seeing the release date of his new album The Love; IV (Diary of A Madman) get pushed back twice already. Originally slated for an April 17th release, the album was pushed back to a vague “summer” release, and is now said to be arriving on August 14th, 2012.

Lyric: Fuck my brains out, baby / Fuck my brains out, baby / Fuck my brains out, baby / Fuck my brains out, baby / Fuck my brains out, baby / She screaming like a baby / Fuck my brains out, baby.” – The-Dream, “Fuck My Brains Out” (2011)

Dream Dictionary: Dreaming about sex reflects a need for the integration and merging of contrasting aspects of yourself. It relates to the quest for psychological completion.

The-Dream is constantly balancing his role as a producer with his solo-artist aspirations. When he’s not writing songs for Justin Bieber and Beyoncé, he’s compiling a wealth of solo material for his own releases. How does he decide which song ideas he keeps for himself, and which ones he farms out to the pop elite? If “Baby” had been released by The-Dream instead of Justin Bieber, would Terius Nash be a household name? One thing for certain, “Baby” would have had far more expletives in it.

Lyric: “I wanna set fire to the darkness / I wanna lay flames right where your heart is tonight.” – The-Dream, “Kill The Lights” feat. Casha (2012)

Dream Dictionary: When you see fire in your dream, it can symbolize destruction, passion, desire, illumination, purification, transformation, enlightenment, or anger. It could suggest that something old is passing and something new is entering into your life.

For The-Dream, a moment of enlightenment came with the passing of his mother. When Nash was just fifteen years old, his mother’s death inspired him to write songs about female empowerment. With hits like “Umberlla” and “Run The World (Girl)” under his belt, it’s safe to say that The-Dream has a handle on female empowerment anthems.

Lyric: “She’s so horny, she wants that old thing back / That ‘mm-hmm, gimme some’ / Rocket ship, that rocket ship / Don’t stop until I’m done.” – Terius Nash, “Ghetto” (2011)

Dream Dictionary: Seeing a rocket in your dream indicates that your plans or ideas will soon be taking off in a big way. All your hard work is finally paying off.

The-Dream has his own record label, Radio Killa Records, distributed through Def Jam. Through a partnership with Interscope, Nash was able to choose several artists he wanted to work with, including Christina Millian (though that partnership is probably kaput), Elektrik Red, and Casha Monet.

Lyric: “Let me sing you my drunk song / I hate to have to crash your wedding, but here it is.” – Terius Nash, “Wedding Crasher” (2011)

Dream Dictionary: A dream about a wedding refers to feelings of bitterness, sorrow, or death. These dreams are often negative and highlight some anxiety or fear.

The money was probably good, but there’s no way The-Dream didn’t feel some level of anxiety when he agreed to produce a song for Kim Kardashian. After it came out, The Daily News called it a “dead-brained piece of generic dance music, without a single distinguishing feature.”

Lyric: “Your man said get my money up / Get my money up / So I went and got my money up / And now I got this money up.” – The-Dream, “Love King” (2010)

Dream Dictionary: To see or win money in your dream indicates that success and prosperity is within your reach. Alternatively, if you are hogging or hoarding money, then it denotes insecurity or selfishness.

In the early stages of his career, The-Dream worked as a collections agent in order to make ends meet. If I owed a shitload of money, having The-Dream break the news to me over the phone via his sensual, soothing baritone might not be the worst way to find out about it.

Lyric: “Betting on horses / Racing in Porsches / Just a small portion of a muthafuckin’ fortune.” – The-Dream, “Sex Intelligent (Remix)” (2010)

Dream Dictionary: When you dream about horses, it symbolizes strength, power, endurance, virility and sexual prowess, as well as a strong, physical energy.

It might be hard for Terius Nash to separate his creative side from his romantic side. The-Dream definitely exudes a strong, physical energy through his music, as is demonstrated by at least two of his personal relationships. He initially assumed a producer role for both Nivea and Christina Milian, but then ended up marrying them both. It would seem as though love and music are interchangeable for The-Dream.

Lyric: “Slow dancing in the club / The diamonds look like rainbows / She’s grinding on my dick / She lookin for the pot of gold.” – The-Dream, “Falsetto” (2007)

Dream Dictionary: When you see a rainbow in your dream, it symbolizes hope, success and good fortune in the form of money, prestige, or fame.

A song about rain launched The-Dream to a level of notoriety that solidified his career as both a songwriter and an artist. When The-Dream wrote and co-produced Rihanna’s smash hit “Umbrella,” it led to a record deal with Def Jam as a solo artist, and secured his seat as one of the most sought after producers and songwriters in R&B.

If all goes to plan, The-Dream’s The Love; IV (Diary of A Madman) will be released on August 14th, 2012.
