Tom Waits is incredibly elusive when it comes to appearances on late night television, but last night he broke the spell with an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, one which was originally scheduled to happen back in April but was post-poned for undisclosed reason. Trust us when we say it was worth the wait.

In addition to a stellar performance of Bad As Me‘s “Chicago,” which featured his son Casey on drums, Waits sat down with Letterman to show off a 19th century rat trap he obviously owns for some reason. The device is absolutely cruel and medieval out of context, but as they both explain, it was made to be used at a time when rats were known to carry some pretty serious diseases. The plague, for example.

Tom Waits will be on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight. We’re curious as to how he’ll top himself.
