For Shad’s birthday yesterday he gave all of us a gift in the form of a free/pay-what-you-can new EP, Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness, the title of which hints at the childhood-mining samples that these songs were built on (though, sadly, no Pumpkins samples are found here).

The EP is embedded below, and you can head over to Shad’s Bandcamp to donate, or, grab the direct download here. But first, let’s take a look at, in order, the original songs that inspired Melancholy‘s track-by-track nostalgia homage.

1. Milli Vanilli, “Girl You Know It’s True”

Complete with the weird skit!

2. The Breeders, “Cannonball”

In this case I’d say that one of these things is not like the others and that thing is the Breeders sample. Fuck yes Deal sisters, fuck yes Shad.

3. Lenny Kravitz, “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over”

Best part of this sample might be the un-self-conscious croon over top of Kravitz’s vocal.

4. Prince, “Seven”

Double-down nod on this title, both to Prince, and to Shad’s own sophomore album, The Old Prince Still Lives at Home.

5. PM Dawn, “Paper Doll”

It’s no “Set Adrift on Memory Bliss” but we’ll take it.

Here’s the EP:
