Remember NXNE? While the citywide spectacle already feels like a distant, foggy memory, it happened about a week and a half ago. And when we say it happened, we’re pretty serious about how much happening really happened. Some of the biggest news of the weekend didn’t come from the festival itself, but from the city’s north end where a tragic stage collapse prior to Radiohead’s planned return to the city killed a member of their crew.

It was this strange, tragic pall that was cast over the Flaming Lips’ NXNE show that same night, a city-slowing spectacle that drew tens of thousands to Yonge-Dundas Square for all the confetti and balloons and oversized hamster balls one can handle. The band’s weird day was captured in all its candid, honest glory by our friends at Spinner, who have put together a genuinely touching portrait of the band’s day as it unfolded against the dichotomous backdrop of the largest show in NXNE history and a genuine tragedy. Watch it here.
