Tim McGraw is a lot of things, and today the Associated Press reports that you can add ‘direct competitor to Dr. Dre’ to the list with the news that the country superstar is releasing his own endorsed line of headphones.

Though less flashy sounding than “Beats by Dre,” the JBL Tim McGraw Artist Series should prove for a much different sound than the overbearing bass boom of every athlete’s favourite headphones.

Calling himself a “Neanderthal” when it comes to electronics, McGraw tells the AP that he helped determine how the headphones—which will be available both over the ear and in ear—would sound.

“The main thing was getting the sound the way I liked it, going through prototypes and saying, ‘I like the bass a little sharper here, I like the midrange a certain way,'” he says.

Retail for the headphones will be $50 for the in-ear models and $130 for the bigger, ’round the head editions. They both go on sale on May 15th. Watch the commercial for the headphones up top.
