Did you ever throw a birthday party as a kid only to have another kid show up and say it was his birthday, too? Because that’s kind of like what happened in Northern Ontario, where Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes declared July 1st, 2012 to be The Tragically Hip Day even though we could have sworn there was something else planned for the first of the month… Oh, right. Canada Day.

As previously announced, the Hip will make their way to Burl’s Creek just outside of Barrie on Canada Day to perform, and in celebration of the upcoming concert the city’s mayor (alongside a whole whack of councillors) presented the Kingston, Ontario quintet with a commemorative flag celebrating their special day. Or Canada’s. Or both.

“It’s fitting to have Canada’s own The Tragically Hip perform here on Canada Day,” said Mayor Hughes after the ceremony. “Burl’s Creek is the perfect setting for what is sure to be a great day for the community and the people visiting for the festival.”
